About Anaya

“I discovered the physical practice of yoga asana in 2008 but in 2015, while living in a yoga intentional community on the Big Island, I learned that yoga is so much more than postures we practice on our mats. However, it was a struggle with my mental health and going to therapy that led me into yoga teacher training after reading the book, The Body Keeps the Score. (Here is your trigger warning.)

I spent the first 23 years of my life enduring all forms of abuse from several people in my life. I moved a lot and grew up without a support system. I lost a parent and a friend to suicide (and more recently, my brother to an overdose). I struggled to find a safe connection in relationships, including the relationship with myself.

Reading this book helped me to understand that every cell in our body has memory and that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. Another word for trauma is disconnection. If we are seeking to heal trauma, we have to get the body involved and reestablish the mind-body connection. This then helps us learn how to establish safe connections in our other relationships.

Yoga is one of the well researched and successful modalities discussed in many books now for helping to release trauma from the body. I knew immediately upon learning this that I wanted to go through teacher training to help with my own healing then share what I learned with others. So, that’s what I did. I took my 200 hour training that focused on proper alignment of the postures. My 300 hour had a therapeutic emphasis with Ayurvedic based yoga, designing practices specific to an individual’s needs (including nutrition, breathwork, mantra, and more). I continued my education by completing trauma informed yoga training and sound healing training.
This path has helped me find healing for myself and my relationships. I have learned to feel safe in my own body, to better regulate my emotions and my nervous system, communicate more effectively, and apply healthy conflict resolution skills. This allowed me to feel safer in my relationships and in the world around me.

I continue to educate myself for my own growth and to better serve others on their healing journeys. I offer private sessions for people who feel they could benefit from a trauma recovery and/or therapeutic focus in their practice.

Helping people discover the power they have to heal themselves, to learn to feel safe and connected again after trauma, to find joy and peace in their lives: this is my passion. I am deeply honored to serve others on this journey.”

Off the Mat

“When I am off my mat, you will find me spending time with my little family, my husband and my unschooled (now adult!) son. I am a wandering soul, a nomad you can find on road trips and hiking trails, a lover of music, singing and dancing in every room of our home, and just all around seeking new experiences to make the most of this thing called life!”
